I've been thinking a lot lately about my five year bloggiversary and all that it means. If you asked me five years ago if I'd still be blogging today I probably would have laughed at you. I was just out of grad school and Scott and I were living in a tiny town without much to do. I missed my grad school friends terribly and had a job that didn't really require much brain power.
I immediately fell in love with writing about books and connecting with book lovers all across the world. But over the past several months I've realized that blogging is more than a hobby for me. I think many of us can say that blogging has changed the way that we think or read or interact but blogging has literally changed my world.
Once upon a time I would have told you that blogging has brought purpose to my reading. Of course reading is still pleasurable, but I thought about it more, I talked about it more, and duh--I wrote about it more. I paid attention to what I was reading, I paid attention to the books I wanted to read, and lately I've started paying more attention to details such as publishing houses and the different politics in the booking world (though this last piece to a lesser degree).
But over the past two years my blogging has stretched so much beyond books. It has allowed me a medium to personally stretch myself. It has allowed me to uncover other hobbies such as quilting, photography, and cooking/baking that I probably would have left undeveloped. Many days I stretch myself to the limit but the point is that I'm stretching myself--continuing working on personal development. Not only with hobbies but with self-reflection. There have been many times when I've felt like a lost wanderer but this blog has been a constant.
Not only have I stretched personally but through blogging I've discovered something about myself that I really love and really want to continue to develop. I love spreading joy to others and encouraging. Whether it be encouraging people to read more classics or non-fiction through challenges, or extreme cheerleading during the readathons, or get moving with the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge, or lately in the kitchen and in other areas through the Pinterest challenge and my Operation Kitchen challenge. (That's a lot of challenges!). But the point is, it brings me such joy to see you all happy! Now, if I could only figure out how to tap into that in "real" life whether it be work or otherwise.
The pitfall is that blogging is tough for non-bloggers to understand. I don't doubt that any of you understand what I'm talking about on this post but it's tough to explain isn't it? Perhaps what I want to say is Thank You. Thank you for sharing the past year or two or three, four, five with me. Thank you for stretching and learning with me for continuing on this journey with me. I am eternally grateful for your support and love throughout the years. Unfortunately at five years my 'free' time is much much more limited than it was in the very beginning, but I do hope you all know how much you've meant to me in this little journey.
If you ask me if I'll still be blogging in five years I'll go ahead and laugh at you now. By then we're hoping to add another (or two) babes to the brood and I know that life will continue to be exponentially complicated. But secretly? I hope so. I simply cannot imagine my life without blogging and all that it brings to my world. It's a tough hobby to explain to others, for certain, but it is one that has helped me grow more than I could ever have imagined.
How has blogging changed your world?
Thank you for indulging me. Thank you for everything really.
To many more...and with much love.

NOTE: As luck would have it, today happens to be one of those days when I'll be going non-stop until I hit the sack tonight. I won't be able to respond to comments today but I WILL respond to comments on this post. I WILL--you mark my words. ;)
I wanted to keep this post simple without many distractions of pictures and links, but if you're looking for more of a journey type of post, my four year bloggiversary sums up the journey better than this one.
This is a really sweet post, just like you. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for blogging. Your blog was the first that I ever read and it's one that I keep coming back to. I love your honesty and your desire to try new things. It inspires me. I have loved watching your journey through quilting, cooking, and especially motherhood. Thanks for letting us all be a part of it.
ReplyDeleteIt is so much more than just the books. I find myself frustrated that I don't have time to blog very often between work, three kids, and a husband that is rarely around. The only reason that I keep at it is because I know that I would miss being part of this amazing community. Your encouragement especially has been more meaningful than you know. Like you, I felt a little lost during a big life change. I moved so far away from family, and this has given me a way to feel connected.
What a heartfelt post Trish. I just wanted to say thanks so much for the many days you've brightened it with a post or photo. Congrats.
ReplyDeleteOh I hope you continue blogging, no matter how many little people you have in the house! Even if you simply don't blog as often - the freedom to come and go as it suits my lifestyle is one of the things that keeps me here. It doesn't seem to matter that I disappear regularly, the connection remains.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. Non-bloggers haven't a clue and think this is all fancy nonsense. Well, maybe it is, but it's also a whole community of like minded people sharing their thoughts and opinions.
ReplyDeleteHapy blogoversary!
Beautifully said! I am so happy to have found your blog, and I always look forward to your posts. Happy blogiversary!
ReplyDeleteThe joy you bring to your blog is infectious. We can't help but leave with smiles on our faces (most of the time), no matter the subject, whether books or quilting or cooking. As for how blogging has changed my world, I think it's made me think about things more critically (in a good way): what AM I reading, watching and listening to?
ReplyDeleteHappy 5th!!!
ReplyDeleteIt has changed my world in a lot of ways. It causes me to write something every week, it has opened up my world to books new and old that I may have not discovered, or wouldn't have had the impetus to read, otherwise. Most importantly, however, are the relationships that have formed because of it. I get a great deal of personal joy out of the conversations I've had on the blog and off it, in email, Twitter, etc. with folks. Even more cool than that, though, is having bloggers meet through my site and go off to form their own strong friendships. I love bringing people together and it is the reason I feel motivated to keep doing it.
Congrats on 5 years. I've enjoyed getting to know you through your blog. Bligging has certainly changed my life by giving me new friends and introducing me to people I would never have had the chance to meet - worldwide. It has expanded my reading and my world. Hope yoy're still going strong in another 5.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 5 years, again!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful essay, as usual! Which is why we all keep coming back! Happy Five! Yay you! (Don't you think it would be good to have a picture of you on the floor on a blanket with a book and a posterboard in front that says FIVE YEARS? LOL)
ReplyDeleteI've been blown away by the number of nonbookish things my book blog has introduced me to. I've tried recipes I've found on your blog. Amanda has encouraged me to work at pursuing fitness. Others have introduced me to TV shows and movies or fun places to vacation. It's such a rich world to be part of and you are one of the best parts!
ReplyDeleteThough I don't always write things of a very personal or diary-like nature, I still consider my blog a running record of my life... much the way that you probably do. Though we keep many things for our family and friends, blogging is still a way to express ourselves and, as you mention, grow and stretch... and that's what I love about it! Whether we're talking books, cooking or "heavier" things, it's all important. It's important to us.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on five years -- and many more! xo
First of all, I hope you will be able to be around looking forward to 5 years. I am always sad when people stop blogging!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you on how blogging causes you to have personal growth. I have found that myself over the years. It is a great benefit to a site originally began to discuss books.
Happy Blogiversary, Trish! Here's to many more years of blogging and friendship. :)
Blogging saved me at a time when I had no contact with the outside world and was cooped up home with the kids full time, lonely for adult contact. Of course, my blog has evolved so much over the last 4.5 years, and you've been a big part of it. I'm so glad I found you four years ago, and that you're still here, that you didn't give up at one point. :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on five years, Trish! And thanks for an inspiring post. :)
ReplyDeleteA beautiful, heartfelt post Trish. Congratulations on 5 years... I'm happy to know you :-)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your 5 year anniversary! That's a great accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your blog and the variety of your posts. I've found that it's not possible not to be happy reading your posts because there always upbeat, interesting and fun. And some have picture of your adorable Elle!
Best wishes for another 5 or more years of your terrific posts and great blog!
Happy 5 years, Trish! I like the end part, best, "hoping to add another (or two) babes to the brood." YES!!! MORE LITTLE CHICKPEA BANANAS!! Oops, did I shout?
ReplyDeleteI hope you're still around here in five years because I will be and I don't want to be out here talking to myself.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on five years and also for doing what you want to do with your blog and letting tha lead you on all kinds of adventures.
I think the biggest things that blogging has done for me is to expand my horizons in what I read, completely changed the source of my book recommendations, and allowed me to make many friends (some I've met in person and some I haven't yet).
Happy 5th! and here's to many more.
I can't explain exactly ow much I've changed since I started blogging, but I'm glad to celebrate 5 years of blogging with you! Congrats and best wishes in the years to come.
ReplyDeleteSept will be my 5 years. :) Nancy the Bookfool celebrates 6 years tomorrow. Crazy huh?! Congrats. I like knowing you.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blogiversary. It has been 5 years for me as well.
ReplyDeleteHi Trish. Great post. Congratulations on five years! Blogging has been a wonderful experience for me and has enhanced my reading experience as well, although that was not always the case. There was a time within the first 4 to 6 months where I was reading books that did not interest me and was feeling the pressure of production. I guess that this is common in the beginning. Once I took the bull by the horns and began blogging within my own personality type and rediscovered my writing style, I fell back into blogging bliss. I have met some wonderful bloggers and have discovered some amazing books.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 5 years! That's awesome! I'm glad you've found a way to make blogging work for you. What a record of this time of your life you're creating. All the best to you.
ReplyDeletewow. congrats to you. im visiting random blogsites about books. :) you have a nice one here.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on hanging in there for five years, and good luck for many more to come! Even if life does get busy you'll have something you can do that you love once in a while :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats and Happy Blogiversary, Trish!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I wanna say: "I'm so glad to know you!!" :-)
No...thank you! For just being you. :-D
ReplyDeleteAnd okay, for Stephen King, too.
And I think OJ is on to something with the blankie and 5 years sign...
Thank you, Trish, for pushing all of us and for helping to make blogging so much fun!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you, Trish! Thank you for your wonderful and compelling posts.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on making it 5 years. I love the mix of posts on your blog and its usually one of the first that I read. Keep it up!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blog-versary!
ReplyDeleteI understand the difficulties of blogging with (a) child(ren) around, but I hope you'll keep at it as I love to read you ;-)
Congratulations on your blogoversary - that is such a fantastic achievement! Here's to lots more wonderful posts :)
ReplyDeleteNew to your blog!
Stephanie @ Stepping Out of the Page
Congrats on your anniversary! You are spot on about some people not getting the blogging thing. But for those of us who do get it, we completely get it and support you.
ReplyDelete*Kristen M - Thank you! I've loved getting to know you this year.
ReplyDelete*Kristi - I am SO grateful that you are part of this little community and that you started your book blog. I still remember that first email that you sent to me and I was so glad to finally connect with you via blogging. I know what you mean about feeling so far away but still feeling connected. In whatever shape or form you decide to continue blogging, you'll always have a loved place in the community.
*Diane - Thank you so much for all of your sweet comments over the years. YOU guys brighten my day!
*Joanna - Well I definitely don't have any plans to go anywhere! ;) But you know how life can sometimes get in the way. And you're absolutely right that these connections also aren't going anywhere. So grateful for that. :)
*Judith - I LOVE this like-minded community--it is one that has stretched me in so many ways. You're a wonderful bunch for sure!
*Anna - I'm so glad to know you as well! And just noticed that you changed your avatar. Little bookworm is cute!
*Unfinished - Thank you sir--to make YOU smile makes ME smile so I figure we all win. Agreed about thinking more critically...really about all aspects of our lives. I think it's a wonderful thing!
*Carl V - You've absolutely hit the nail on the head with your description of how blogging has impacted your world. The writing, the opening up, and especially the relationships. And while I feel like I'm just getting to know you (thanks for the comments!), I do know that you've brought together a GREAT many of people through your challenges!
*Tami - Thank you! It's been fun getting to know you as well, especially on twitter where we have a chance to chat a bit more. I love the people I've met over the past five years.
*Word Lily - Thank you Hannah!
*Rhapsody - Will mull over the picture. Surely you guys don't REALLY want to see that do you?
*Melissa/Avid Reader - I think that it's natural for people who have been blogging for a long time to start branching out, especially as friendships form and with the use of twitter. I love how varied this community is and you're absolutely right using the word "rich." So glad to know you Melissa!
*Meg - I know just what you mean about having a record of life through blogging--it's one of the things that has drawn me to you as a person and to many others. It really is fun to look back at the posts and see how far we've come. Have you ever thought about publishing your posts in a hardcopy book (for yourself)?
ReplyDelete*Kailana - I'm so glad that we've connected and become friends over the past couple years and especially recently on twitter. I love the personal growth that has come with reflection and blogging and love to see it in the other blogs I love to read.
*Amanda - I will never forget that day when I received those first comments from you. Thought you must be crazy (in a good way). I'm so glad that we've connected as well and it's been so fun to see the growth in blogging over that time.
*Jilian - Thank you so much. :)
*JoAnn - Oh thank you. :) I'm happy to know you as well!
*Amy - Thank you so much for your sweet words Amy. Life is not always upbeat but I do try to remain positive even when the goings get tough (or just not post! Ha!).
*Bookfool - I think if Scott had his way there would be many many more chickpea bananas (though he does NOT call her that. Ha!). Time will only tell...
*SuziQoregon - LOL! The best thing about blogging is the people, isn't it? I've loved connecting with you...especially on twitter. Blogging has expanded my horizons as well--just can't imagine life without it. ;)
*Sara C - It's a strange and interesting thing this blogging, huh? I'm glad to have connected with you as well! :)
*Care - Congrats on your upcoming five years! I'm sad it took so long for us to "meet" but I'm glad we did!
*Nise' - Congratulations on five years for you, too!
*FABR Steph - I'm glad that you're reading what you want to be reading. In the past five years I've certainly gone through periods like that as well and it does lead to burnout. The most important advice I give new bloggers is to find your own and do for your self. Sounds like you're doing that now! :)
*MJ - It definitely has been a journey but ultimately we all need to blog in a way that will make us happy! Thanks for your encouragement.
ReplyDelete*HappyVic - Thanks for visiting! I'm not as bookish as I once was but still enjoy the bookish discussion now and then.
*Kelsey - Thanks for the comment Kelsey! Think it's important to spend time doing things we love rather than making chores of them!
*Melody - I am so glad I know you too Melody. Thinking about you a lot lately.
*Softdrink - Can I tell you how glad I am you're back haunting twitter? ;) And I'll give the blankie some thought--might be scary, though, huh?!
*Lisa - Hopefully the pushing has been good and not aggressive. ;) YOU GUYS make blogging fun for ME!
*Deb Nance - Thank you for your sweet comment and congrats!
*Teresa - Thank you so much. :) I figure life is too varied to write about just one thing. Ha!
*Larissa - it is tough to carve time out with babes running/crawling around but it's also nice to have an outlet. Thank you so much. :)
*Stepping Out of the Page - Thanks for visiting Stephanie! :)
*Uncomfortable Itch - Thank you--it is hard to explain blogging to a non-blogging world but am glad to have found this loving and supportive place here.
Congratulations, Trish! I'm catching up on all your posts celebrating this milestone. I enjoyed reading how much blogging has come to mean to you, and how it has changed your world. I will have to think about that one, that's an interesting thought. Happy 5th anniversary! and many more :-)
ReplyDeleteAwww! This was such a great post to read Trish! I hope that you and I are both blogging 5 years from now :) Life gets busy and I blog in spurts at times but it is something that I can't imagine not doing. And I LOVE reading your blog! Congrats on such an awesome accomplishment of 5 years of blogging :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post. It's people like you that keep me going as well. So see you over the next five years :) one way or the other
ReplyDeleteCongrats Tri! It is amazing the closeness you can feel with those you know and those you don't know "real life know" from blogging. I wish I was still as good of a blogger as I was a few years ago but I tell myself having something is better than nothing.
ReplyDeleteYou are so great and always keep up. What a wonderful thing to have for your posterity. :)
Love you!
xoxo
Happy 5 YEAR blog anniversary! How wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteYou and I are fairly new blog friends and I am so very glad that we have connected. I adore reading your blog [even though it's not as frequently as I wish, but I know you know how that goes.. ] and I enjoy bumping into you on twitter regularly as well. Here's to many, many more years of blogging! xo
This may be the sweetest blogiversary post I've read, Trish. Your blog always puts a smile on my face :) Well done.
ReplyDelete*Susan - Thanks so much for the blogiversary wishes. :) Five years still seems to be such a long time!
ReplyDelete*Samantha - I do wish that there was more time in the day for blogging but at the end we just have to take what we can, huh? I'm glad to have gotten to know you via blogging Sam! ;)
*Jenny Girl - LOL! To five more years it is, then.
*Rae - It is totally not in my nature to do something as habitual as blogging but I really have come to love it and I do think it's changed the way that I think and act and do. It's fun to look back on all the posts!
*Christine - I'm glad we've connected as well, especially via twitter which seems to make keeping up much easier. Thank you so much for your sweet comments.
*Stacybuckeye - Awww, thanks Stacy! :) You guys are the ones who make it so special for me!
