  17. Oh heaven, what to choose! Rather frighteningly (but with a side helping of awesome), your review list is 80% made up of books I already have on my shelves and/or have read already. I think a blog follow may be in order here... Some of my favourites from the list are: Atonement (*sobs*), Eat Pray Love (*cheers*), Frankenstein (*LIVE!*), Like Water for Chocolate (*offers dessert*) and The Outsiders (*slicks back hair*).

If I had to pick one of the last few remaining books(!) it'd have to be INTO THIN AIR. I've read one of Jon Krakauer's books already and have been putting off another because I'm so sure I'm going to worship it, I'm saving it for best! (Can you do that with books?)

Thanks - and happy hopping! :)

I DON’T ‘GO ORGANIC’ OFTEN, BUT WHEN I DO - John Stammers

I don’t ‘go organic’ often, but when I do
cash registers explode, shop assistants lurch back
    beneath furry earflaps,
the wild beasts knitted on Iroquois sweaters
    leap up,
their hunters let fall their bows,
returning, at all fleet, to tented encampments of their tribe
    to sit wordlessly
    with the Great Spirit.
Cram up my basket, I say, for I am not all water -
though hydration may form the signal part
    of any halfway harmonious regime.
I am told that amaranth binds a higher protein content
    than the equivalent weight
    of any goodly-made walrus.
Pass me that cantaloupe, farmed in biotic growing methods
by organo-wonks with expensive recreational habits.
    I wish to pay
largely for it, if you would be so kind,
    and desire
little change from a high denomination banknote.
Only stay, stay your hand there on its surface
to let my own against the edge of yours, tender, as in a slow wooing.
    Fresh we were and wild,
O yes wild, I say, were we,
implacable huntress of the free-range legume.
And what does it come to in any sort of natural currency?
A single meal for two, free of human taint,
the feel of cool, green skin beneath your palm touched along mine,
and a further difficulty - I see that, scourge of the brassicas -
I do not always know what I am doing.

  41. It's taken quite a while to choose from such a huge list, but I'd really like to read A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian. Your review makes it sund wonderful and it's a book that's been on my radar for years but never quite made it onto my bookshelf!

One of my favourite books from your list is Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I'm half Greek, so I loved the story of Cal's grandparents and their flight to America. Cal was a wonderful character and I loved the whole grand scale of the novel.

    Thanks for a wonderful giveaway!

  42. There are so many on your list that I've loved--probably because I've picked them because of your review. The book I probably love the most is The Book Thief. The copy I read was the library's, but I found a pristine copy at my local charity shop recently. Score!

If I were to win, I would love a copy of The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it. I've heard it's set in Barcelona and we're heading there in the fall, so I'm hoping to read it right before.

  77. You have reviewed SO MANY amazing books that I've enjoyed that it's ACTUALLY really difficult for me to make a choice, right now. But if I really had to choose, I'd probably pick "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy. It is an extremely well-written, intricately woven tale - which comes together at the end in a way that takes your breath away. With "History of Love" by Nicole Krauss being a close second - there is so much sadness, and so much love in that book, it is both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.

I'd love to win "History of Love" by Nicole Krauss, because I bought the book, read it once and then my uncle borrowed it to read. He fell in love with it, and so I let him keep it, telling him I'd borrow it from him if I ever decided to re-read it. Unfortunately, he passed away this past February, and I even used quotes from the book in the eulogy I gave for him. But, I haven't been able to recover the book, and I'd love to have my own copy, because it is an INCREDIBLE story, and because I'd love to hold on to that connection between my uncle and me.

Thank you for your generosity, and for being part of the Literary Giveaway Hop.

  90. So many great books, it's so hard to pick one! I would choose The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian because it's a frequently banned book and I have never actually read it. As for a book from the list that I loved, there are at least twenty, but my absolute favorite is The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. I read it as an undergrad in my Third World Women Writers class and it had a profound impact on me. I had never read anything by an Indian writer, and it led me to discover not only Roy, but other voices as well. I have read a lot of Roy's political work as well and I love her for activism.
