Off Again

Long story short we flew to Columbus Ohio last night and are driving back to Dallas today and tomorrow. Crazy I know. 1,000 miles in two days.

One of the things we'll be having long philosophical discussions over is when you can check off a state (or place) from the list of places you've been to. Does driving through count? Eating a meal? Spending the night? Airport layover? What do you think??

See you Monday! Or Tuesday.

  1. I think it counts. Have a good time.

  2. I've been in New Jersey for a total of about 3 hours (Newark airport) and I totally count that, but I don't really want to go to New Jersey proper, so... I guess it depends on that? :)

  3. Driving through definitely counts. Airport layovers, maybe not so much in my book. ;-)

    Have a safe trip!

  4. I took a road trip last September with my husband from Atlanta (home) to Los Angeles. It was amazing and you absolutely count the states you drive through! There is no better way to see the country and get a feeling of the vastness of American than from a car. Have fun!

  6. I don't count airport layovers or drive throughs. I think you need to experience at least one thing in the state -- a meal, a stay-over. something. When you're driving through, you're not using all of your senses to experience that place. Now if there's a rest-stop? That's right on the line. ;)

  7. Driving through totally counts! Although when I drove back from Denver to Boston, we did stop in pretty much every state we drove through, even just overnight. It was one of the coolest ways to see that part of the country!

    Enjoy your trip!

  8. In my opinion if you've physically been in the state, you've been there. I think it's cut and dry, whether you drove through it, were there on a layover, or spent time there. Maybe it's not as fun but you've been there. :)

  9. Agree with Rae, but also with others! If you've physically been in the state, it counts. Though it's morbid, my dad always says, "If you dropped dead in an airport, your obituary would read 'So-and-so died in Dallas, Texas,'" or wherever you happen to be. But just to soften my conscience, I personally "count" the states where I've left the airport/gotten out of the car -- either to stretch, use the restroom, eat a meal, etc. But obviously that's up to you! :)

Hope everything is A-OK, and you're recovering from your (very) long drive!

  10. Did Elle go with you? That just reminds me so much of when we lived in TN and would go visit family. Depending on which way we made the "circle," it was 830 miles from Memphis to my parents, then a few days later 420 miles from my parents to Rich's parents, then a few days later 1,020 miles from Rich's parents back to Memphis. We did it three frickin' times during Annie's first year. She logged a lot of miles in her car seat. :P

Hope you arrived home with a little time to recover before starting the work week!

  11. Hope everything's all right. That's a lot of driving. I tend to count states we actually stop in, even if it's just for a meal.

  12. I don't count it if all I did was stop over in an airport. But driving through totally counts! And bonus points for stopping and eating.

  13. Hi Everyone! Everything is fine--we flew up to Ohio to pick up a truck for a family member. Kind of a long way just for that but it was fun to see some countryside that I hadn't normally seen.

For the record--I count the state if I've stepped foot on the soil. For example, I've been to the Atlanta airport several times but haven't ever stepped foot on Georgia ground. So no count. Although I have stepped foot on Montana soil--for about 10 minutes--but I don't feel right counting that either. Guess it's complicated. ;) It was fun to read your responses, though!

  14. LOL! Jason and I were just talking about this tonight. He counts drive-throughs and layovers and I don't :) I'm in Cleveland, but grew up in Columbus. They're 2+ hours apart. Hope it wasn't too traumatic.
