Where in the World: McKinney Library

This post is part of the Where in the World Are You Reading monthly meme. Visit Kelly's blog for the August Linky

I have a small confession to make. I've only been to my library twice in the five years that I've lived in McKinney. Once was to get my library card and the other time was to pick up an audiobook for work.  We have two branch locations—one in our town's downtown (which is so cute but makes parking difficult) and the other less than a mile from my house.

I'm just not a checker-outer of books. Mostly because I'm a book hoarder and if I hoarded the library books they'd probably charge me a lot, but also because I'm kind of lazy. I don't mind taking a trip to check out the book but hate doing thing like returning items. I know.

With that said, however, I do use the library—quite a bit actually. McKinney has a great online selection of audiobooks that I can download without leaving the house. What I forget, though, is that while the online selection is limited, there is an even bigger collection at the actual physical library. I need to keep this in mind when I'm running low on those precious Audible credits!

And…as the babe gets older I'll start making trips to the children's section with her. What better time to scope out the children's section than for a blog post! So off we went to check out IT for me and browse through the books for babe. (Though IT was checked out and the babe lost interest quickly).

Tell me about your library. Are you an avid visitor or checker-outer of books?

I hope you'll join us this month over at Kelly's as we visit libraries (hopefully all over the world?!)

  1. I used to use the library a lot until I started blogging. Now I rarely go there. Taking the books back isn't nearly as fun as checking them out - I think that's why video stores have gone under.

  2. Your library looks so nice! I went to the library constantly as a kid, but rarely stepped foot in there as an adult. That changed about a year ago, as I got really invested in audio books -- and I just can't commit to buying them! Spending $20-30 on something I'm going to listen to once just isn't economical for me.

So I've started borrowing them from my local library, which is just a few miles away from my office! I run over there on my lunch break to pick books up and drop them off. I love reserving them online, then waiting patiently to get an email saying they're ready for me to pick up. Since our county library system is part of a much larger system, I can borrow books from any number of places -- and then just drop them off right back in town. Makes it easy to get... well, just about anything. Now I'm a library lover for sure! :)

  3. Wow, see, now I wish I had gone first because my library is not that nice at all. lol I still haven't actually gone and taken pictures. Just been busy and not checking books out because no time to read them! I used to enjoy going to the library when I was a kid. I still have fond memories.

  4. I like that sculpture on the wall. Did it have anything written or depicted on the pages?

  5. Looks like a very nice library. Our library was remodeled within the last 10 years, and is nice. The system is very good with lots of choices and not a long wait for popular books either.

  6. I live very close to a libray, we have many branches, I believe I started to use my library when my boys were young, not because we didn't buy books but because they always had activities that were free and exciting, like author visits, and pet shows, and plays etc. So it was, reading rainbow clum, etc. And now Friday remains my library day, I'm there at least once a week and carry a stack home. But I do buy.

  7. I love the bench with the sculpture!

Like you, I'm not much of a library user. But I'm working on my post! Next week...maybe.

  8. *Bermuda - You make a great point about movie rentals! I think they're similar.

*Meg - I use the library for the same reason--audiobooks--but the online selection is pretty decent that I haven't had to go into the branch. I really should, though, as the selection is much greater when I actually go IN the library. It is hard to shell out $30 for an audiobook. I signed up for Audible about a year ago and am so glad that I did. Somehow the $15 that is automatically withdrawn each month seems much more forgiveable than a big chunk of change.

*Kailana - We used to go to the library all the time when I was a kid as well. I always loved the summer programs! Now I have so many books of my own at home that I don't need to go. I should more often, though!

*Jeane - I didn't get a very close look but I don't think that the pages had any inscriptions. Would have been neat if they did!

*Diane - That's great that you don't have a long wait for the popular books! I'm not sure what our wait is like--all I know is IT is taken! ;)

*Irene - Wow! It sounds like your library is really active! As Elle gets older I'll want to check into the different events and activities offered at the library--right now they're all during the day and since I work I can't take her. If you'd like to share your library this month we'd love to see it!

*Softdrink - I think Elle was pretty freaked out by the statue--wasn't sure what to make of that strange man. ;) Ya--would much rather go to the bookstore than the library. Terrible, I know, but true... Plus they didn't have ANY GASKELL!!! NONE.

  9. I LOVE our library in town! Its right down the street from my house and as a kid, my mom let me walk there by myself because its on the same side of the street and I didn't have to cross any major roads - just a couple of driveways. I was constantly there as a kid, and just recently got back into it when Borders closed and now I'm not working so there's really no extra fundage to buy books. Besides, if I only have 2 weeks to read something, I'm going to do it! Its different then buying something that I'm only going to read once or twice, or putting something on the kindle and I forget its there.

I also love your library, it looks lovely. :)

  10. Toddler Town! How cute! I've never been to the McKinney library, and sadly, I don't even remember seeing it when I was out and about downtown. Weird!

  11. I had an amazing library in my college town. They're a well-known library system in the state, they have a huge selection and excellent service, plus the building was old and beautiful. I miss it! Now, I'm using the NYPL, but I don't go to the NYPL building that everyone thinks of with the lions. Mine is a tiny little annex library around the corner from my office. This is weird, but it smells like summer camp? Ha! Anyway, I love the pictures of Elle exploring the library!

  12. I am definitely a library girl. I go at least once a week. Taking the books back has never bothered me because I'm always so excited to check out new titles!

  13. I hope to make a regular stop of the library when Mouse is a bit older. I haven't yet been to our local library but I know where it is at least. I made a point of finding it and driving by soon after we moved to our new neighborhood.
