Goodbye 2012. Hello 2013!!

Happy New Year!

2012. What a year! All in all it was a really great year--of course there are always ups and downs in a year but I can't help but look back at the past twelve months with pleasure at all the things I accomplished and all the fun experiences I had with my family.

I'm not going to relist all of my 2012 Things for you here because my list for 2013 is going to look pretty dang similar, but I accomplished pretty much everything on the list except for finishing Scott's quilt and my Christmas quilt. I even had a bullet point for begin another quilting project--possibly a quiltalong with fellow book bloggers and I'm pleased I can check that off the list!

2013 will be an interesting year. Elle is growing old which means much more interaction and play time but also hopefully some more independence as she learns to entertain herself more and more. Either way I never want to miss out on time with her because I have something on my list that needs crossing off. I'm also still hopeful for a baby come next year--or at least pregnancy. I know that will throw a big loop into my year as well. Such is life, right? We can rarely plan...and as always I need to learn to recognize my limits and when to step back.

All in all I'm optimistic that this year will be a great one filled with wonderful things.

The Things I'd Like to Do in 2013

  • I WILL finish Scott's Quilt. And the Christmas Quilt. I'm actually waiting on my machine to be repaired before I can quilt Scott's but I have promised myself I won't work on any other sewing projects until the Christmas Quilt is finished. Except hexes.
  • Complete all hexes in prep for sewing together (I still haven't counted how many I need but I have 137!)
  • Read/Listen to 24 books
  • Read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon! I'm tempted by this Outlander e-book bundle. Join me?
  • Continue with Operation Use My Kitchen Stuff. Bundt pan, immersion blender, trifle dish, fondue pot--several things are left to play with and I loved this challenge in 2012.
  • Catch up on Recipe Scrapbook
  • Use My Cookbooks - focus on one cookbook a month
  • Run a 10K race
  • Attend four cultural events with Scott/family (last year we went to Japanese Gardens, Luau in Hawaii, Jersey Boys, and Dracula Ballet...among others)
  • Take a photography class
  • Write one letter/card a month
  • Journal. I'm going to try to get back to the daily notecards for this but I love the Project Life idea (introduced to me by Kathleen), but gah...
  • Continue to write and blog about all types of topics. I've really come to love this blog and don't expect for it to change in style from what it's become over the past year. I hope you've enjoyed the variety, too.
Except for the journaling bit, this doesn't feel too overwhelming. I'm really tempted to add needle arts to the list but think I need to make better headway on the hexes first. I'd really like to make working out three times a week one of my things but...

And for those of you wondering, I do plan to continue with the Pinterest challenge. It's been a huge success thanks to you--my only regret is I often find myself unable to visit the links due to time limitations. Wish I could figure out how to fix that.  Right now I'm thinking of bringing it back in February?

What are you looking forward to in 2013?

  1. I love your list for 2013 - and we share many similar goals :) I too want to start cooking more - and using either cookbooks, Pinterest, or AllRecipes more often for inspiration. Writing and photography goals are always on my list as well.

I wish you and your blessed family a most wonderful upcoming year.

  2. You are so wise to enjoy that precious little girl while you can. I'm amazed at how well you balance things in your life. Happy New Year!

  3. Those sounds like great goals for the new year, Trish. All the best to you in accomplishing them.

  4. Great list! And I love your "goal" list instead of resolutions. I'm doing the same this year, but some of my goals are difficult to quantify...such as...I want to eat less processed food. We do ok in this area, but I still really like snacky things like Goldfish and chips. I also WILL lose the remaining baby weight from both kiddos...and along with that, I really want/need to get back into working out and running. I actually joined my old gym a few days ago :) Maybe I should run the 10k with you! Also would love to read Outlanders with you too! I'm excited about your kitchen gadget challenge--I enjoyed reading about them in 2012. Can you please make some form of lemon cake in your bundt pan? :) Enough rambling, but Happy 2013! Hope it's a really stellar year for you, Scott and Elle!

    1. Laura - If you're feeling REALLY ambitions you could try to make your own crackers! Like these wheat thins: http://pinterest.com/pin/90705379966235457/ Seems I also had a goldfish recipe pinned but I can't find it now. Go figure. :) And definitely for Outlander! Maybe this summer?

    2. Laura, you might find some help in the suggestions by the Weekend Cooking crowd for books to support healthy eating goals. I was impressed with the depth and variety: http://www.joyweesemoll.com/2012/12/29/weekend-cooking-books-to-support-new-years-resolutions/

  5. I love your list. I need to sit down and think through my goals for the year as well. Also, you're the first person who has inspired me to look up the Project Life stuff. I see it everywhere, but it always seems like so much WORK. Going to look at your link now.

  6. I'm going light on myself with goals this year, but mostly I'm just hoping to get back to a more balanced approach to my writing and health. Happy New Year Trish!

  7. Happy New Year Trish! Definitely read the Outlander series, or better yet listen, they are fantastic on audio. We have two weddings this year my daughter in July and my niece in May!

  9. Happy New Year!

What a great list - Outlander is on my want to re-read list (perhaps via audio) I've read the first 4 in the series and the first 3 a couple of times. Would like to go back and re-experience from the beginning but not sure if I'll do that this year. My first re-read priority is Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd. I've been saying for years I wanted to re-read it and this is going to be the year.

I want to make it to at least March 15th with the Photo a Day challenge to make a full year. I'll probably continue because it's fun but making that full year will be significant. I haven't kept up the notecard journal on the cards but I do have it online in a google document. I want to transcribe it to cards in time to start year two of that in May. Whether I get there or not? We'll see . . .

I'm glad you're continuing the cooking stuff with use your stuff and cookbooks. I get great ideas from your posts.

  10. Wow what a list! Good luck on your many goals - and if you only keep one, make it spending every minute you can with your Chickpea. Have a marvelous new year.

  11. Happy new year, Trish :) I love the optimism and ambition in your list, it's really motivating! Hahaha, Elle is not that old yet, is she?? She is looking more adorable by the day though.

  12. Wonderful list, can't join you on the Outlander series, just found it too much. 137 hexs WOW! I had planned on working on that while I sat with my mom this year, but... since she's passed away I'm not feeling like I want to continue right now. I'm a little sad still, forgive me, but I'll be watching little one grow. Thanks and Happy New Year.

  15. Happy new year, Trish! That's a long list but a good mix of long-term and things you can do in short amounts of free time. Have you a set month(s) for Outlander?

    1. Charlie - No set date for Outlander yet but I'm thinking about sometime this summer. Seems like a good summer book, huh? ;)

  16. Wahoo to the 10k!!! You can do it!
Isn't Project Life awesome??? My friend Kelly does it and I think it's so neat.
I have "take a photography class" on my 30 before 30 list but it's just not going to happen by June. Classes are SO ridiculously expensive here. But one of these days!!! :)

  17. I agree with Diane! No sleeping in 2013! ;) It is a great list and you always inspire me to do more. I hope to use my cookbooks more often, especially since I'm still lusting after a few that I didn't get from Santa. And the letter/card writing is a wonderful idea.

    Happy New Year, Trish!

  18. Last year at this time, I promised to start writing a book. I didn't even write one paragraph! I set-up the office and everything. This year, I may just start with short stories. I'll see where that takes me.

I didn't know you were planning to have another baby. We had our kids 5 years apart because at first, I only wanted one but when he was about to start Kindie, I realized we wanted another. They get along for the most part and it's nice having an older brother to look after her, but closer together would have been better, I think.

  20. What I'm looking forward to in 2013 is having you as a Project Life buddy!!!! :D :D :D

You really do have an awesome list of goals there! I just love how well-rounded it is. I'm sure you'll have amazing success again this year because you're just such a dynamo!!!

  21. These are excellent goals. Happy New Year, Trish!

  22. Love the sound of your goals -- and the idea of not putting too much pressure on yourself to finish them. I like the idea of making resolutions -- plus, it appeals to my love of lists! -- but know that 2013 is going to be sensationally busy and emotional for me, so I'm trying to take it easy.

Both my sister and I will be getting married this year, so it's going to be a doozy! I just hope to stay in the moment, not go too crazy planning our big day and generally enjoy myself as much as possible this year. Will be an exciting one!

  23. I love your recipe scrapbook! I also have a stack of recipes that I've torn out of magazines or printed online. They are randomly stashed all over the place. I also want to work on putting together some sort of book for family recipes in 2013.

I need to get going on my hexes, I am so far behind.

  24. I'm hoping to run a 5K this year for the first time in WAY too long. Looks like we will have to keep each other motivated on this one :) I hope that you are successful with all of these goals for 2013!!!

  25. Great list, Trish! I want to run a 10K too. I've done a couple of 5Ks but a 10K seems like a lot. It's really mind over matter for me I think.

  26. The project life idea sounds reall cool. I want to start scrap booking, same concept. Happy New Year Trish!

  27. Focus on the babe! I love your list and how awesome that you completed so much in 2012. Journaling has been the bane of my existence since I was a little girl. I have always loved the idea and have never found a way that works for me. I should probably get myself a little recorder and just say what I want to remember -- it'd probably be a better record. But then there's the transcribing. UGH.

  28. I just went down the Project Life wormhole, reading all about it all over the internet. This might be something I tackle... someday. Right now I feel a little too broke to tackle another big craft project, but maybe I will buy things slowly? It seems like such a simple way to keep track of everything.

  29. Love the way you've resaly made your blog a complete reflectionof everything you love!
