Our newest bundle of love arrived a few days earlier than expected--on Saturday, August 31st at 3:49 pm Scott and I welcomed Baby Billie Jean into the world.
Olivia Catherine, whom we will call Evie, weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and is 19.75 inches long.
The birth story...
Around 5:30 in the morning I started to feel crampy contractions. By 6:00 I could tell that these weren't the Braxton Hicks I had been experiencing for the past couple of months and so I told Scott, "I'm not positive but I think this is waffles." Waffles being the labor keyword. Scott started timing the contractions and even though I was halfway in denial I took a shower, called my mom to pick up Elle, and prepped my things for the hospital. We stopped at McDonald's for a quick bite to eat (I really wanted IHOP) and made our way to the hospital for monitoring.
By the time we got to the hospital my contractions had slowed down but were becoming more intense. As I was dilated between a 4 and 5 I was admitted and Scott and I walked around the hospital for an hour or so. Around 11:30 Scott left to grab some things at home and my midwife came up to the hospital to go over the game plan for the day. IV, epidural, break my water, have that baby. Meanwhile I was just hanging out on the labor ball (think of a giant exercise ball) sewing together my hexies and taking the contractions as the came. Ha!
12:30 I was hooked up to an IV, around 1:30 I received the epidural. 2:30ish my midwife broke my water. At this point I was still at a 5 and we started taking bets as to when I would deliver and how big baby would be. When the nurse said 4:00, everyone balked--especially my midwife. Around 3:10 the nurse checked my progress and I was at an 8. She reminded me to call if I felt any pressure and not 10 minutes later did I ask Scott to run to the nurses station. Sure enough, she said I was ready to go...we just needed my midwife! Who had run to Best Buy. Little Evie arrived 10 minutes after my midwife did. Scott delivered her, handed her to me, and cut the cord. Even though the labor went much quicker than it did with Elle, my epidural was lighter and it convinced me that I really do not ever want to have a natural birth. Thankyouverymuch.
How has it been with a newborn the second time around? Blissful. Evie is very good natured so far and I have been allowing myself to lie around and sleep when she sleeps. I have no issues with her falling asleep on my chest and all together have been taking it easy. The evenings are more hectic when Scott and Elle get home and there have been a few times when I've nursed at the dinner table so I didn't have to miss that time, but otherwise things feel much smoother this time than with Elle. Maybe because we already have a routine in place?
The nights are still a little rough--Evie rarely ever fusses but she grunts in her sleep and this keeps me up. We moved Elle out of our bedroom around 8 weeks and I assume we'll do the same this time as well. So while there have been some sleepless or restless nights (for me), as a whole motherhood the second time around has been much easier so far. So far.
How is big sister Elle doing? So far she seems to be adjusting rather well, if not a little bit better than I expected. Of course she was visiting her grandparents over the weekend and has been in school during the day. The real test will be this weekend when we're all at home most of the time. She has shown jealousy when Scott is holding Evie and she isn't as cuddly with me except for when it's bedtime, but otherwise she is curious about "Baby Sister Baby Evie" and has asked to hold her a few times. I know there will be growing pains as she adjusts to sharing the spotlight and our undivided attention, but I also know that she'll really love her sister.
Life with two little girls. Life will never be the same. I can't wait.
Oh, and if you're wondering if Elle's hair was that dark--check out her introduction post and tell me that those babies don't look nearly identical. It's all that heartburn...I'm telling you!
Now if you'll excuse me, it's time I go get my snuggling fix...
