Graphic Novels/Comics February – Sunday Salon 77

Something very curious has been happening to me lately. Other than a book club book once a month, my reading selection ahead of me is wide open. It partly feels weird not having any readalongs lined up at the moment, but even weirder is finishing a book and having no idea what to read next. It’s been a long long time since I’ve had absolutely no future reading plans. I kind of like it!

So when Debi, Chris, Lu, and Kelly were talking about reading comics in February like they did last year, I decided that since my reading slate was blank, I could fill my month with comics! It’s been way too long since I’ve read a graphic novel and they really are one of my favorite discoveries as a blogger. I’ve already loved and read Persepolis, Maus, Fun Home, and Watchmen and read a handful of others.

So over the past few weeks I have been compiling a list of things that I’d like to read. I’ve already made one trip to the library to pick up four, plan to hit my town’s second library on Monday, and I have a number of books reserved at my neighboring town. I think I might be a little overzealous, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about diving into reading (note: all my free time lately is spent reading, so this is saying something).

What’s on my radar??

Boxers and Saints – Gene Luen Yang
French Milk – Lucy Knisley
Relish – Lucy Knisley
Blankets – Craig Thompson
American Born Chinese – Gene Luen Yang
V for Vendetta – Alan Moore
Ghost World – Daniel Clowes
Are You My Mother? – Alison Bechdel
Anya’s Ghost – Vera Brosgol
A Game for Swallows – Zeina Abirached
Castle Waiting – Linda Medley
Maybe something by Jeff Lemire

Holy Cow! I don’t think that I can read them all but I’m so excited to try.  Care to join us? The twitter/instagram hashtag is #comicsfebruary.

Do you have any other favorite graphic/comic books that I should add to my list?

  1. I read Relish this month and loved it. To your list, I would add:
    Aya by Marguerite Abouet
    Stitches by David Small

  2. I actually just put a bunch on hold at the library yesterday (I know! after my post about how I can’t handle returning books to library) because I really want to join in. Of the books I’ve read, you have some great things ahead of you. Blankets is one of my absolute favorites!

  3. I have made the decision that graphic novels are not for me. I’ve tried several universally loved titles and just can’t do it.

  4. I’m in! It seems like a lot of us have Boxers and Saints in our stacks. You have so many fantastic titles in your stack: Blankets, Relish, Castle Waiting, and Anya’s Ghost. Happy reading!

  5. -definitely read Essex County by Jeff Lemire.
-Agent Gates and the Secret Adventures of Devonton Abbey by Camaren Subhiyah, but only if you already watch Downton Abbey.

  6. Any idea how happy it makes me that you’re excited about your reading this month? Like REALLY FREAKIN’ HAPPY!!! Seriously, I think I can’t be any more excited about Comics February, and then someone makes me even more excited!!! :D Hope you love them all, Trish!!!

  7. This sounds like great fun! I really would like to try more graphic novels – they’ve been kind of hit and miss for me but I think they have a lot of potential to be something I’d really enjoy. Sadly, I have already made too many commitments for February to play along. Enjoy!

  8. On your list, I’ve read Relish, Anya’s Ghost, Blankets, Boxers & Saints, Castle Waiting, and American Born Chinese. They were all wonderful, except for maybe Anya’s Ghost. It just didn’t do much for me! I’m so excited you’re joining us… I can’t wait to hear about all your comics!

  9. I’m not going to join you…I’m just not a joiner, as you might have noticed, but I do want to read some graphic novels this year. It just might not be this month. I’ve heard good things about many of these from other folks, so they look good to me. Another one I keep hearing about is Saga by Brian Vaughan (not sure on spelling there). It might be one to look for too.

  10. I’ve only read French Milk and I don’t think I really got it. I can’t wait to read everyone’s reviews to find something that appeals to me a little more.

  11. How funny, I went to the library yesterday (Sunday) and picked up a couple of graphic novels to try! I checked out Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. Many of the titles you listed above are on my TBR list, too!

  12. DON’T READ ‘ARE YOU MY MOTHER’. Or, I mean, read whatever your heart desires, but Are You My Mother is sooo not as good as Fun Home, so please consider yourself warned :) I really really want to read Relish, for reasons I can no longer remember, so I’m excited to know what you think of it.

  13. I kind of did the same thing back in November. I read Blankets, Anya’s Ghost, Persepolis, and Relish (maybe this one was in December). I think Blankets and Relish were my favorites. I love how engaging they are and how quickly I can finish them. Makes me feel so accomplished. Haha. I think each one only took me one to two days. I’ll have to look at some of the other ones on your list. Good luck and happy reading.

  14. Enjoy your reading, Trish! I have a small stack of graphic novels I hope to read at some point. I hope you enjoy Blankets when you get to it. I really enjoyed that one.

  15. This does look like an impressive grouping of graphic novels. The last one I read was a Marvel Comics take on Pride & Prejudice. Not tech an original graphic novel, but lots of fun!!!
