Cara

Well if time flew quickly with my second baby, it is going at warp speed with my third. Make it stop, make it stop!! But every day I am more and more in love with this sweet babe. Cara is a joy and I’m so happy she’s part of our family.

Sleep – Cara is a great little sleeper most of the time. We did go through a bit of a rough patch the first of the month when she would wake up about 20 minutes after I put her back down in the middle of the night–sometimes keeping me up for about an hour–but she stopped that around 7 weeks when she magically started sleeping until 3 then 4 then 5 in the morning. On the other hand, though, this past week she’s also been going down at night around 10. Not by our choice! I’m not sure what happened to get her off track, but hopefully we can get back on soon again as 8-10 is my time of the day to completely decompress.

Naps are still hit or miss. She’s been waking up around 8 in the morning and sometimes goes back down until 9 or so. She takes a morning nap and an afternoon nap, but sometimes she catnaps all day in 30 minute stretches and sometimes her nap (generally the afternoon) lasts for three hours! I’ve started running my errands in the morning rather than afternoon in hopes that she’ll catnap en route and then take a longer nap in the afternoon. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t! She does still sleep in the rock n play in our closet. Evie has moved to a big girl bed so the crib is free, but I just can’t. I don’t know why I get so worked up about it–both older girls adjusted really well to the crib when we made the transition from our room.

Eating – And she’s still my best nursing baby. She’s on par for weight with Elle–11 pounds even at her 2 month check up (a little less than 50%) but she is such an efficient eater that it hardly takes any time to nurse her. At night we’re up for maybe 10 minutes and then she goes back down. My only annoyance with this is that she tends to only take one side but then 30 minutes later will want the other.

I nurse her every 2 and a half hours during the day and usually clusterfeed in the evening (you know, when the girls get home, dinner needs to be made, baths are taken, and bedtime rituals). But, I guess if it helps her sleep 8 hours at night, I don’t mind the clusterfeeding. I haven’t cut anything out of my diet, but I do try to limit dairy products. I always regret it when I eat too much pizza or something spicy.

Development / Personality – Cara is so sweet and seems to be a happy baby. She’s content most of the time though she does seem to get bored fairly easily. She doesn’t care for her activity mat at all but is sometimes OK just hanging out in her bouncer seat or the swing for a while. She likes being read to and loves when I sing to her. She coos quite a bit–though not as much as Evie–but hasn’t given me any good laughs yet. She does smile a lot. She likes her baths and loves to talk to me when I’m changing her diaper. She hates her carseat though seems to be getting better. She loves going for walks and luckily our weather has permitted us to go on several over the past couple of weeks.

No big developmental milestones over the past month–though she is starting to grab onto things (my hair! my shirt!) and is so strong. She does great with tummy time but when she’s had enough she’s figured out how to roll onto her back. I’ll put her back on her stomach and she’ll roll right over again. She holds her head up well, but she’ll still let me hold her like a baby (something both older girls had grown out of by this time). Sometimes I’ll spoil her and hold her while she naps–especially on days when she’s only catnapping 20-30 minutes here and there. Oh. And she’s found her fists. She doesn’t suck on them often, but I’m sure she’ll be a thumbsucker just like her sisters.

And the part you care about…

Unfortunately this is the only one I had with that great smile of Cara. The girls wanted to join in on the picture fun and Elle was quite rowdy. Evie was patting Elle’s back for some reason, and Cara decided to just ham it up. Silly girls!!

If you ask Evie what the baby’s name is, she says “Baby Sisser.” She calls her Cara every once in a while so I know she does know her name. Elle is still smitten, especially now that Cara is smiling more often. Those girls–I can only imagine what the future will hold for them! (As I’m the oldest of three girls close in age, I can imagine…)

With a heart full of love…and sometimes insanity. ;)

  1. Love love love the photos! You’re right, time does go fast….so glad you’re having fun and enjoying the ride.

  2. SO MUCH CUTENESS! I can hardly handle it. Seriously, they’re the most adorable trio of little ladies ever and I want to smother them all with kisses! #CrazyAuntKatie is crazy. And I’ve taken to referring to myself as “Aunt” to virtually every baby ever. Seems less creepy for kiss smothering purposes.

It’s a fun, challenging time, isn’t it? At this point in time, Cara is looking more like Evie but I know that changes from month to month. Even now, my daughter’s hair goes from brown to dark blonde and back again and it’s so weird to me.

  4. Cara is a sweet baby!! Amazing how your girls look so much alike, all dark haired babies to blondies. What you know and how you relax with the third baby is just a wonderful thing. She is thriving, and her big sisters look happy too. So happy you share this :).

Sooooo cute! I love the pic of the girls. Cara’s smile is so adorable. And the split photo with her eyes closed and then grinning – so much personality in her eyes! I can’t tell what color they are now? Love!

  6. I’m so jealous of her sleep schedule! Right now I’m lucky if Sydney sleeps for a solid two hours. She’ll actually sleep a little longer during the day, but never at night. With just one at home, I’m in all of anyone who manages with multiple kids! Cara is the sweetest!

  7. I love that double shot where she first looks like she’s sleeping but then opens her eyes like “I fooled you!” :D

  8. She’s so lovely!!! And I love that the girls are all over her … Lucas wants to play with Olivia so bad and I catch him moving here once in a while. lol. I keep telling him to cool it since she’ll be up and about soon and then I’m sure he’ll regret his eagerness!

  9. I love these updates, but mostly I love the photos. Cara looks like a very happy little baby and I can’t help but smile when I see her smiling face in my feed. I’m so glad things are going well for you and that she’s such a good eater. That last picture is sweet. She is obviously well-loved!

  10. Your girls are just so precious! Yes, times seems to go by even faster when you have three kids. I look at my oldest some days and just wonder how we have gotten this far already. Sob! I always enjoy these posts….it reminds me of when my littles were actually little. Thanks for sharing Trish! (and that picture at the end of all three is just priceless!)

  11. I’m a little late to Cara posts but I must say that you have the most gorgeous daughters! I am always in awe of moms like you, who love the baby stage. I hated the clueless and helpless feeling. I love that you still do these posts because it seems I forget so much even after a few years. Now all three girls will have their memories saved for eternity :)

  12. All three girls are just beautiful, but there is something about Cara. She has a little impishness in her that is making itself known very early! I say enjoy these quiet moments because I’m not certain life will be quiet once she learns to crawl!
